Da Vinci Robotic Surgical Machine
Intuitive Surgical, Inc. manufactures the Da Vinci surgery robot along with individual surgical instruments: clamps, cutters, endoscopes, etc. During manufacturing, each instrument gets calibrated on the IPT machine which uses a motor carriage with 5 servos and high speed (2.5 Gb/s) optical data connections.
Over time the Carriage Motors burn out and need to be serviced. Replacement takes 4 hours and shuts the line down. The proposed solution is to create an interconnect PCB board that is mounted on the outside of the carriage to allow easy access to connections to reduce line down time.

High Speed Hirose Optical transceivers
3V3 LDO tapping motor power for use with transceivers
High speed layout design requires signal traces to be same length
Signal traces are sandwiched between copper GND pours
Top and bottom layer connected with vias
Ground planes for high-speed signal and motor GND pours are geographically succinct
4 Layer board
Optical cable and FFC cable designs also provided
Tool path had to run as if the board did not exist. No changes to software required.
